The air was filled with laughter as we talked about her Italian roots and playfully debated potential baby boy names—everything from timeless classics to quirky, lesser-known choices. The name may still be undecided, but one thing was certain: April’s glow was undeniable.

For this New York City studio maternity photoshoot, April wore a delicate bola necklace, a beautiful accessory that held both style and sentiment.

A bola (also known as a harmony ball) is a small pendant, often worn by expectant mothers, that contains a chime inside. Originally from Mexico & South Asia, it is traditionally very popular in Europe and particularly cherished in Italy, the bola is worn long so it rests near the baby bump. As the mother moves, the soft, melodic sound is said to soothe the baby before birth, creating a gentle bond between mother and child. In the U.S., bola necklaces are still a rare sight, making April’s choice both unique and meaningful for her maternity portraits.
